"Making of a Legend"

Black Devils • First Special Service Force (FSSF)

The US 5th Army was stalled at the gates of the Liri Valley. German defensive positions atop the major mountain features dominated the routes into the Liri Valley that led to Rome. The 5th Army had unsuccessfully, and at great cost, attempted to capture Monte La Difensa on three separate occasions. On the night of 2/3 December 1943, using an unconventional approach up the rear of the mountain top that the Germans thought was impassable, the FSSF scaled the cliffs and captured the summit after a vicious two hour battle shrouded in the heavy early morning fog. It took another six days to gain control of the entire mountain.
