"Scala Alla Vittoria"

(Stairs to Victory)

In the first major campaign for the Canadian Army in the Second World War, the 1st Canadian Division landed at the south end of Sicily on the 10th of July 1943 and would see continual combat until early 1945 in the south of Europe. It fought at such disparate places as Pachino, Salerno and Ortona.

Though the end of the war was some 2 years away for these soldiers of the D-Day Dodgers or Monty’s Mountain Goats, this division of Red Patch Devils would prove to be one of the finest divisions in the Italian campaign.

Over 6,000 Canadians ended up being killed in action in Italy, most of them from the 1st Canadian Division.
